Do you need a VPN in Finland?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your traffic and routes it through a server. In Finland the internet is relatively open and safe — so a VPN is not “mandatory”. It can still help in specific situations.

In short: You are more likely to need a VPN on public Wi-Fi, for remote work when your employer requires it, or if you want more privacy from your ISP. A promise of “faster internet” is rarely realistic in Finland.

When does a VPN help in Finland?

  • Public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports): a VPN reduces the risk that someone on the same network sees unencrypted traffic.
  • Privacy from the ISP / network: the ISP still sees that you use a VPN, but not as easily the content of individual sites.
  • Remote work: some employers require a VPN for company resources.
  • Travel: in countries where networks are restricted or Wi-Fi is untrusted.

When is a VPN not the answer?

  • It does not replace strong passwords, two-factor authentication or an up-to-date OS.
  • It does not make illegal activity legal.
  • Free VPNs are often funded by ads or data — read the terms.
  • A “Finnish IP” does not automatically mean better streaming; streaming services’ terms may restrict VPN use.

What to compare before you subscribe

  1. Real price: intro vs renewal; monthly vs 1–2 year commitment.
  2. Device count and platforms (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, router).
  3. Logging policy (no-logs) and company jurisdiction / audit history.
  4. Speed and servers in Finland / nearby — important for gaming or video calls.
  5. Kill switch and WireGuard/OpenVPN support.

Digivertailu’s VPN table lists public prices (e.g. Mullvad’s flat €5/mo) and campaign prices in USD. Affiliate links may not be wired yet — the button goes to the provider’s site. See the VPN comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is a VPN legal in Finland?

Yes. Using VPN software for privacy or security is generally legal. You still need to follow service terms (e.g. streaming).

Is a free VPN enough?

For occasional trials maybe. For longer use a paid, well-known service is usually clearer on logging, speed and support. Free tiers often have limits.

Does a VPN slow the connection?

Usually a bit, because traffic is routed encrypted. A good service and a nearby server keep the difference small; a poor service is noticeable.
